Gesture Support on Linux in a Windowed Environment

Today Canonical Ltd. announced that they are contributing multi-touch and gesture support to the Ubuntu project.

This is exciting because it’s the first true gesture support available in a multiple-window environment like the Linux desktop (or Microsoft Windows, or Apple Mac OS X).  It’s also exciting because I’ve been a part of its development and I have an awful lot of insights into the challenges and problems inherent to providing a complex interface such as multi-touch gestures when it’s possible to have multiple input foci, input devices, and display devices all in use simultaneously.

Still, Canonical should be congratulated for making this work available as free software.  I have a feeling that things on this front will be improving dramatically and rapidly as supporting hardware becomes widely available.
